Q Report customers also have access to www.myjewelvault.com, a members-only, highly secure website where you can view your Q Report, report a claim and more. In addition, your item’s value will be reevaluated annually on a complimentary basis. This advantage eliminates the need for a separate, often costly, appraisal.

Beware of Gold Scammers

Gold Buying ScammersWith Gold being as high as it is, there seems to be “Gold Buyers” at every corner. Before selling your jewelry, be cautious, many of these “Gold Dealers” are scammers. The biggest and most successful scammers have been those that request you to mail in your gold. I recently found this great article about these gold scams.

“I am sure you have all seen or heard about a company called Cash 4 Gold they even had a Super Bowl Ad. The Company is being heavily promoted online as well.
The sell sounds great on the surface: You pack up all your old jewelry that you’ll never wear again into an envelope and send it, insured, to Cash4Gold. They melt it down and cut you a check for the value of the gold. End of process. It sounds better than going to a pawn shop — the process is simple and requires no personal interaction with an appraiser — so what could go wrong?

A little online sleuthing finds that I’m not the only one who figures that if Cash4Gold has this much money to spend on TV ads, someone’s getting the short end of the stick, and it’s probably the people sending in their family heirlooms to be melted into ingots. The folks at Cockeyed.com put Cash4Gold to the test, rounding up a bunch of old rings, necklaces, and earrings, and taking them to a regular pawn shop to be appraised. The offer: $198 for the lot. They then sent the items to Cash4Gold and waited for a check in the mail. It arrived within a few days as promised… in the amount of 60 bucks. (You don’t have to accept the check; the deal isn’t done until you cash it.)

That price alone is practically criminal, but that’s where the truly slimy part of the operation begins. First, if you call Cash4Gold and ask for your stuff back, you abruptly get a better offer: In the case of the above experiment, the offer was a whopping $178. That’s a better deal, but still not market rate, though the caller was told that Cash4Gold could “manipulate the numbers on their end” to make it appear that more product was sent than was in reality. Bizarre, but it’s really the only way Cash4Gold can cover it’s behind to convince you the original offer wasn’t a wholesale ripoff.

As bad as that is, it’s far worse if you opted for the company’s “Fast Cash” option. Here, that original offer ($60) is wired into your bank account within 24 hours of them receiving the booty. It sure is fast, but it’s not much cash — and you don’t have the option of declining the offer at all. You’re stuck with a pittance for your valuable gold items. (It’s also worth noting that Cash4Gold has offered Cockeyed cash 4 removing its expose from the web…)

As a side note, another website offers an in-depth expose on how the system works, this time analyzed from the inside by a former employee. Here it’s outlined how the company offers bonuses to phone operators who can convince you to accept a lower offer and how the company attempts to delay payments as long as possible. It’s also worth a look if you’re considering sending stuff to Cash4Gold anyway and haggling for a better deal.”

Do not be fooled by the loud and colorful advertisements by these out-of-town buyers. Your best option is to sell locally and more importantly to an established, long time running business. Selling at long time local establishments gives you a better chance for recourse. For more information on selling your items go to http://www.orloffjewelers.com/buying.php

What Does Your Engagement Ring Say About You?

Are you a traditional bride or more modern? . Is your heart set on a princess cut engagement ring, or maybe you have been dreaming of a marquise stone. Believe it or not but your engagement ring can reveal more about you than you know. AOL Shopping recently wrote an interesting article about what exactly your engagement ring says about you.

Did you get an emerald marquise when you became a bride-to-be? Or was only a diamond solitaire acceptable if your guy didn’t want to stay solitary? Chances are, when it comes to your engagement ring, the cut, color, and kind of stone you select says something about your personality. If he did the picking, based on our basic descriptions, did your guy choose correctly for the kind of girl you are, or did he lose out on guessing at his true love’s lifestyle? Even though these demeanor descriptions might be a bit superficial, there’s nothing surface level about how seriously our society takes engagement rings — according to Psychology Today, the average cost of bridal bling is over $3500!

Marquise Cut – You’re a smart cookie who knows how to make the most of any situation, whether it’s a small savings account or a small stone budget. The way a marquise stone is cut makes it look a lot larger than it actually is! You may be thrifty, but even if you aren’t, you watch where your money goes and how it’s spent, avoiding waste.

Solitaire  – Hey classy lady! Tradition rules for those who wear a solitaire – you may dabble in trends and love the latest fashions, but when it comes to your expensive pieces, you stay close to the classics.

Princess Cut – The name says it all – you love being treated like royalty, and it shows– especially with a regal cut of stone whose name is even like that of a diva! It’s hip to be square, and you’re on the cutting edge with your fashionably cut engagement ring.

Three Stones– You’re a lady who likes to indulge– two may be better than one, but three is the charm! The only thing you want just one of is your husband. Loading up your left hand with three stones is a great way to get the carat up without being too costly.

Eternity Band – You’re elegantly low key – you like to have a little flair in what you wear, but in an understated way, like with a diamond-encrusted band instead of a single stone.

Colored StoneYour uniqueness doesn’t stop with your unusual choice for an engagement ring – you stand out from the pack with whatever you choose to do, and hate to be lost in the crowd of social conformers. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but unexpected pearls, rubies, or emeralds will call attention to your awesomeness for the lifetime of your love.

Halo SettingCan there be anymore bling on your ring, Ms. Attention Lover? You love to be in the spotlight and your ring does, too! You work hard–and succeed–at sparkling and shining everywhere you go. Available at every price point, and certainly a lot of bling for your buck, the halo setting sparkles and shines so much you might be in danger of summoning Batman.

No Stone at All – Like Carrie on Sex and the City, you don’t need a huge stone to flaunt your fiance’s love for you, nor do you want to gauge how large your love is by the size of a rock – you’re strong-willed and stubborn, confidently refusing to participate in a time-old tradition that started on a whim from an advertising agency!

Florida Attorney General probes Cash4Gold

An article featured in the trusted National Jeweler Magazine yesterday, February 18, 2010.

Florida Attorney General probes Cash4Gold

By Michelle Graff
February 18, 2010

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.–The Florida Attorney General’s Office has launched a civil investigation into mail-in gold company Cash4Gold, after receiving 72 consumer complaints about the operation, the office confirmed to National Jeweler.

Cash4Gold, whose parent company is Green Bullion Financial Services LLC, is a Pompano Beach, Fla.-based company that asks consumers to mail in their old, unwanted gold jewelry in exchange for cash.

It’s perhaps best known for its widespread TV advertising campaign featuring rapper MC Hammer and the late entertainer Ed McMahon, including a spot that aired during last year’s Super Bowl.

According to the attorney general’s office, the civil investigation into Cash4Gold began in November 2009 after a number of consumers filed complaints claiming they were not paid nearly enough for their gold.

Consumers also state that they contacted Cash4Gold within the allotted 10- to 12-day return period to say they were not satisfied with the amount offered for their gold, only to be told their gold was already melted.

Others allege that when they returned their checks because they were unsatisfied with the amount offered, they never get their jewelry back, according to the attorney general’s office.

In addition, numerous complaints charge that Cash4Gold claims it never received their envelope of gold jewelry or that the envelope was empty when it arrived.

Also under investigation by the attorney general’s office are Cash4Gold refinery Albar Precious Metals Refining Inc., and executives Jeff Aronson, Howard Mofshin, Jerome Kornbluth and Jerry Kaye.

Cash4Gold is cooperating with the investigation, according to the attorney general’s office. The office’s Economic Crimes Division in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is handling the case.

In a statement sent to National Jeweler on Thursday, Cash4Gold said it is confident the matter will be resolved quickly, amicably and to the full satisfaction of the office and the company.

“Cash4Gold is extremely proud to have worked closely with Florida officials to create and implement the first law of its kind regulating the mail-in gold buying industry, and we welcome the opportunity to work with lawmakers in Washington on a similar bill that is national in scope,” the statement reads. “We are, and will continue to be, a leader in this country on the cooperation between law enforcement and the mail-in gold buying industry we pioneered.”

Is the Grass Really Greener on the Other Side?

With these ads featuring people stating they pay more if you ship it out-of-town or sell to a company that comes from out-of-town and set up in some hotel room are you really getting a fair deal? Just because they come from out-of-town are they going to do better? My favorite line is “Chickens don’t swim, pennies don’t fall from heaven, and you never get more than what the true value is.” When you deal with a local dealer you have recourse. You deal face to face with the person that gives you the answers and they are drawn to be honest. An out of towner comes in today and then they are gone tomorrow. Think “Buy Local and Sell Local.” Your best deals are in your own backyard.

50 Years of Exellence

In 1955, Paul “Prince” Orloff opened Orloff Jewelers. He was renowned as a businessman for his personal touch and refined taste. As we grew, Orloff Jewelers became more than a jewelry store; it became part of the community. When Orloff retired in 1988, his son James took the helm and carried on the tradition.

James Orloff had always taken a keen interest in his father’s work. At the age of 5, he was already taking apart watches and polishing jewelry for his father. When he was 15, James passed his first diamond grading class at the Gemological Institute of America. Today, his expertise is recognized across the country as an appraiser and custom jeweler.

James and Mary Ann Orloff continue to meet challenges with integrity, quality and customer service–just as their family has for more than 50 years. “Trust and integrity are paramount in this industry,” James Orloff says. “It’s a very special feeling when I’m helping a second- or even third-generation customer. When that happens, you know you’re doing something right.”
